In this business tv show, Business Networking Strategist Andy Lopata talks about how to find the networking groups that are right for you, and how you can build relationships that really reward the time and effort you put in:
“One of the areas where people struggle in networking and they try it for a few months and walk away is because their motivation for going to an event and their motivation for joining a group. The vast majority of people that I’ve asked first attended a networking event because someone invited them. They then joined the group because they went a couple of times, felt there was a buzz, saw other people getting business and thought I’ll have a bit of that and neither of those decision making processes make sound business sense to me.
By all means look into invitations if you receive them and perhaps go to the event and investigate but a better reason to attend a networking event is because you’ve allied that event with the goals and what you want to accomplish and you’ve researched to find the right groups for you and I’ve asked people who are going to join groups, I’ve said have you researched other groups that offer the same thing in the same area and compared them and I’ve never met anyone who said yes.
So it’s important to actually do the research and make a sound business decision about your networking rather than just saying yes to the first person who gives you an invite.
