Etiquette about contacting an old supervisor?

by admin June 27th, 2009. Filed under: Professional Networking.

I tried to contact an old supervisor (for help with my current job search) via LinkedIn because I do not have his email. If I do not hear back, how long should I wait b4 it is okay to place a follow-up phone call? We had a great working relationship.

Hi there,

If you had a great working relationship with your old manager, just give him a call. I have a linkedin account as well but I rarely use it because it is not my primary source of communication. If you have his number, give him a call and politely ask him if he could provide you with some guidance in your career search. That's just part of networking.

I have former employees who call me for reference all the time!

Good luck in your career endeavors!

Cheers!

Is the former supervisor a direct connection? (If so, you have the email address, even if you don't realize it)

Just wait a day or two and call "Hi, I was looking to get in touch and didn't hear back from you, I know messages get lost and thought I'd give a quick call…"

I would have called directly in the first place. If you had a good relationship, then it is a good way to reconnect. I would follow up the linkedin contact with a phone call withing 72 hours.
